Auswalk’s Cape to Cape trip is a self guided Inn to Inn accommodated walking holiday. You progress along the track moving from one accommodation to the next. We move your luggage for you while you are out walking. You form your own group of two or more people and can choose your own starting date. If you prefer to go with a guide we also have a group guided Cape to Cape trip you can join.

The Cape to Cape is one of Western Australia’s premier long distance walking trails. Situated in the Margaret River wine region, it joins Cape Leeuwin in the south with Cape Naturaliste in the north.

Each cape features an historic lighthouse, commissioned in 1896 and 1903 respectively, to guide shipping along the busy sea-lanes. Violent Antarctic storms have etched out a spectacular coastline of rocky bays, limestone platforms and craggy little islands.

It’s a rewarding expeditionary hike, and at 135km, it’s the longest coastal walk in Australia. But, unlike ship-wrecked sailors, you’ll enjoy staying in our attractive and mostly quite luxurious lodgings each night. The track offers a great deal of variety. It follows beaches, leading to secluded coves you are likely to have to yourself. There are wilderness sections that feature sand dunes and the odd bit of scrambling over rocky headlands. At times you’ll meander along gentle forestry tracks with huge karri trees towering overhead. All of this is interspersed with well-formed walking tracks.

The track passes through picturesque coastal settlements, allowing you the luxury of an occasional coffee, ice cream or cold drink.

This walk is suitable for most of the year but if you come in springtime, you’ll have the bonus of masses of colourful wildflowers.

See some amazing photos of this track, as featured recently in Australian Geographic. There’s also a magnificent video of the walk.

Why not build in a rest day or two along the way?

This is a fairly long and tough walk so we highly recommend that you incorporate a couple of rest days along the way.  The first rest day is best in the middle of the walk – if you would like to do this then have a look at the 10 day itinerary guide below. You might also like to reward yourself at the end of the walk with a second night in our luxurious resort with day spa facilities. We can arrange this for you at the time of booking. Ideas for what to do on your rest day/s are shown on the 10 day itinerary below.

Location

We walk the track from south to north for logistical and prevailing weather reasons. It starts in Augusta, about 350km south of Perth. You can get there by public transport. The holiday finishes in Bunker Bay / Dunsborough. If arriving by car we recommend leaving it at the last accommodation at the northern end of the track then catching a bus to Augusta - this will make things easier at the end of your holiday. Full details will be provided.

Grading

35% easy, 50% moderate, 15% more challenging. 15-25km, 5-7 hours walking time each day plus one 8 hour walking day. Distances can be shortened. Mostly coastal foot tracks, some 4WD tracks, some sandy beach sections. For more detailed information including daily walk distances and times please see our Fact Sheet.

Hats off to Auswalk for their planning with regard to accommodation and meals. On all accounts our hosts were welcoming, the food wonderful and accommodation likewise. It was a comfort to know that at the end of a long day's walk we could look forward to a hot shower and good food.

Doing the Cape to Cape self-guided with Auswalk was a challengig, exhilarating and rewarding experience with fantastic coastal scenery/amazing wildflowers, variety in the walking and excellent food and accommodation. It was particularly nice to enjoy a radox spa bath at the end of most days and that helped us get through all the walking!
